As beardsmen, we are already aware of one indisputable fact – beards are awesome. We choose to grow them, we choose to maintain them, we choose to treat them like a part of our family – we know full well that our beards are a killer part of our style. But did you know that there is actual quantifiable science that proves beards are good for you?

Huffington Post recently published an article listing seven science-backed reasons that having a beard is actually good for your overall health. So without any further ado, let’s dive in and see what they have to say.

1. Beards can slow the aging process

Facial hair can actually block upwards of 95 percent of harmful UV rays from the sun – that’s like slathering your face with SPF 30. This in turn can help prevent wrinkles, skin aging, and decrease the risk of skin cancer. It should be noted that there is another 60 percent of your face that isn’t bearded, so don’t go stand in the sun for 13 straight hours because Huffington Post said it was ok now that you have a beard.

2. Wearing a beard means no more ingrown hairs

We all hate the annoying and painful ingrown hairs that come from straight razor shaving. Good news, fellow beardsmen – that worry is a thing of the past.

3. Bearded bros are perceived as more masculine

Ladies love Ryan Gosling, but would he really be any match for, say, Zeus? I rest my case.

4. Beards allow for more free time

Huffington Post cites Dr. Herbert Mescon, former chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Boston University, who told the Spartanburg Herald in 1972 that the “average beardless man will spend 3,350 hours shaving.” That’s 3,350 hours too many.

5. Beards can reduce asthma and allergy symptoms

Beards can actually trap some pollen, dust, and other allergens before you suck them into your respiratory system, thus leading to reduced risks for infections. Did you hear me? Your beard is saving your life right now!

6. Beards keep you warm

Any beardsman who has even grown a beard and shaved it off – whether for a job, or out of sheer curiosity – will tell you that a cool breeze becomes one of the most shocking and terrible feelings you’ve experienced once your beard is no more. Don’t do that to yourself. Keep the beard and stay warm this winter.

7. Beards keep your skin moisturized

While bare skin usually needs the application of a moisturizer to keep it hydrated and healthy, beards retain a fair amount of natural oils produced by the skin.

So if every anyone decides to foolishly criticize your beard, just point them to the scientific proof that our beards are awesome.
